Have you just bought a used car and you see that the airbag indicator light is on as a warning signal? This is a general issue for most car owners who have had a car that was in an accident at one point. To get this light shut off, you would need to get an airbag module reset service done.
The airbag indicator light is usually yellow, red or orange in color. Depending on the car model, the light will show lit up SRS letters which stands for Supplemental Restraint System, or it will show the shape of a deployed airbag with a driver on a seat belt. The fact that the airbag indicator is on does not mean that the car is not safe for driving at all.
Airbag systems comprise of airbags, impact sensors, pretensioner, and modules. These components can be replaced if damaged. If the indicator light is on, the airbag will never be deployed in the event of an accident. In other words, there won't be protection for the driver if an accident occurs, even if all the parts of the airbag system is functional. This is why an airbag module reset service is needed.
Just a typical seat belt can't provide maximum protection for a driver if there is a clash or a head-to-head collision with another vehicle and that's why airbags are needed as well. Most seat belts only have a pretension system whereby the device tightens the car's seat belt so as to prevent the driver from being pushed forward in a collision or clash. The system will also prevent the driver from sliding through the car's seat belt. Similar to the operation of an airbag, a pretensioner is triggered by the impact sensor that is mounted on the car bumper.
As noted earlier on, this airbag indicator light is usually on in a used car that has had an accident before it was purchased. Although the airbag might have been replaced before the car's purchase, the memory in its airbag module was not cleared. That's why the airbag reset service is required. Airbag reset simply means resetting the memory of the airbag to normal. In the same vein, an airbag SRS Airbag module reset service will help diagnose the airbag if the indicator light can't be turned off.
