Visiting the Ham Capital Smithfield, Virginia

Located in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia, Smithfield is a city best known for curing and producing Smithfield Ham. It is known as the ham capital of the world, Smithfield currently attracts many tourists. Today, in order to be considered a ‘Smithfield Ham’, a ham must be processed within the town limits. The first record of the commercial sale of cured "Smithfield Ham" is a receipt to Ellerston and John Perot in the year of1779. The Commonwealth of Virginia first controlled usage of the term "Smithfield Ham" in a 1926 Statute passed by its General Assembly stating “Genuine Smithfield hams [are those] cut from the carcasses of peanut-fed hogs, raised in the peanut-belt of the Commonwealth of Virginia or the State of North Carolina, and which are cured, treated, smoked, and processed in the town of Smithfield, in the Commonwealth of Virginia.” The "peanut fed" and "peanut belt" demand didn’t last long and was removed in 1966. The present statute states “...Genuine Smithfield hams are hereby defined to be hams processed, treated, smoked, aged, cured by the long-cure, dry salt method of cure; and, aged for a minimum period of six months; such six-month period to commence when the green pork cut is first introduced to dry salt, all such salting, processing, treating, smoking, curing, and aging to be done within the corporate limits of the town of Smithfield, Virginia”. Smithfield Foods is still the world’s largest hog producer and pork processor to this day.

In addition to delicious ham, visitors to Smithfield can enjoy the town’s history. Smithfield's Historic District is the main attraction, with more than 70 contributing properties from the Colonial, Federal, and Victorian periods. Historic buildings that interest tourists include the Isle of Wight County Museum, Historic Fort Huger, the Schoolhouse Museum, the Old Courthouse of 1750, and St. Luke's Church, a National Historic Landmark located just outside downtown. Other sites that hold lots of history that you may like include the former colonial tavern, now the Smithfield Inn; the Wentworth-Grinnan House, and Windsor Castle Park. Visit their local website https://www.smithfieldva.gov/ to learn more.

Whether you come here to enjoy the great Smithfield Hams from where it was originally born, or come here to enjoy the Victorian homes and its Historic District there is always something to do here.
