Ottawa is a small village and the county seat of Putnam County in the state of Ohio. It is likely that you may have never heard of it before. Nevertheless, it has some interesting history.

The Ottawa and the Wyandot tribes first inhabited the region. In 1792, George Washington sent three men—Major Alexander Truman, his servant William Lynch, and a guide and interpreter named William Smalley—to the area on a peace mission. Both Lynch and Truman were killed. A similar mission by Colonel John Hardin ended with the same fate. In the year 1817, a big portion of the land in Northwestern Ohio was relinquished to the U.S., and Blanchard’s Fork Reserve was created. However, the Reserve was surrendered and terminated a few years later in 1831, and—in 1832—the Ottawa population that was living there moved to Kansas. Within Blanchard’s Fork Reserve, two Ottawa villages existed. Of these two, the Lower Tawa Town developed into the Village of Ottawa, Ohio in 1861.

Although you may not be super into history yourself, I believe it is important to know the history within your surroundings and know what people or things may have previously inhabited the area that you are living in today. Now that you know the history of Ottawa, Ohio—if you ever find yourself driving through the county you can keep this information in mind. Perhaps you will also find a museum or some monuments in the area that can further educate you on the Ottawa and Wyandot tribes that used to reside in the area.

While in the area, you can enjoy some of the other fun attractions the county has to offer, such as Cavern Club Winery, Gilboa Quarry, Hillside Winery, and Country Acres Golf Club. If history really is your thing, you can also visit the Jay Cooke Home, Johnson’s Island Civil War Prison, and Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial.

Before driving out on a trip to Ottawa, I would suggest that you take a look at the condition of your car. This goes for any trip that you take—not just when heading out to Ottawa. It is better to check for any damage and repairs needed before a trip rather than have to deal with them mid-trip. For instance, if you notice something wrong with the seat belts—a problem that is much more serious than you may think—deal with that immediately. A seat belt repair shop that offers quality services and specializes in everything from seat belt webbing replacement to seat belt retractor repair that you can trust is Safety Restore.
